He obsesses over Microsoft and Apple. He loves watching videos on how electronics and programming works. He can tell you what every version of windows start up tone sounds like... EVERY VERSION! He brings a lot of joy to his family. At a young age, Korbin was diagnosed with Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder, expressive language disorder, speech sound disorder, Coordination disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
All of this information about Korbin’s diagnosis was overwhelming and scary for his family. His mom, Heather said she was heartsick and worried, but she was also relieved. It brought some clarity to her and she was able to better understand why Korbin struggling in some areas.
Korbin has been getting services from Easters Seals since 2013. He is currently in Speech and Occupational therapy, as well as Behavior management/ Individual counseling. In the past, Korbin received ABA and Play therapy.
The family of Korbin has been faced with a lot of struggles on learning how to deal/ understand Korbin’s diagnosis. Heather says:” Life with children always presents challenges. Korbin’s are just a little more unique. Crowds and places that might cause sensory overload are difficult. Driving to three therapies a week isn’t always easy with other things going on after school. Driving over an hour each month to his Developmental Ped Dr isn’t always easy. Helping other family members understand the why of how Korbin is and sometimes acts. It’s a balancing act delegating time to both children. His sister is a very active high school student. Korbin takes a lot of work sometimes. Our whole life changed with Korbin. We have changed a lot to accommodate his needs. But it’s what families do. “
Since beginning his journey with Easter Seals, Korbin’s speech has improved so much over the past year. When he began at Easter Seals he was difficult to understand; his mom felt like his constant interpreter. Heather could understand him 90% of the time and the rest of his family maybe 80%. His speech is so much more understandable – making him less frustrated. Easter Seals has also been helping him understand himself and others. He’s learning to tell his aide or teacher when he needs a break, when things are about to hit overload, or he needs help. He has a long way to go but is getting better and better every day because of OT and Therapy
