Ethan is four years old and just like any boy his age, he loves to play with cars! He has a whole travel size suitcase filled with cars that Ethan takes with him wherever he goes. Ethan also loves to play basketball! He sometimes brings a basketball to his therapy sessions just in case there is time to play! Ethan was diagnosis with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. This is a form of cerebral palsy which consists of a high and constant tightness or stiffness in your leg and hip muscles.
Upon learning about Ethan’s diagnosis, his mother said, “We were nervous and uncertain. Ethan’s diagnosis didn’t occur until later (after age 2) we knew he had gross motor delays as he had trouble walking, but the official diagnosis didn’t come until later. We knew we would be continuing with Easter Seals as they had been supportive of us during the Early Intervention Years.”
Once Ethan received his diagnosis, he began physical, occupational and speech therapy. He has graduated from speech therapy and is currently only receiving physical and occupational therapy.
Ethan struggles with balance and coordination. Through Easter Seals he has learned strategies to keep his balance for longer periods of time and over uneven ground. It has been amazing for his family to watch him run and play on the playground safely without any assistance! Ethan has also learned to feed himself and write his own name! His family is filled with joy watching Ethan’s confidence grow!
Ethan has come a long way since he first started at Easter Seals. He is becoming stronger and in the last 18 months he has learned to ride a bike! This is what makes Ethan a Champion of his own abilities.
