Austin is three years old and just like any typical three-year-old, he loves playing with play-dough, running, and mimicking everything his older brother, Gavin, does! He brings a lot of joy to his family. Austin was diagnosed at a young age with Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy.
The diagnosis of Austin was overwhelming for his family. His mom, Mandi, said: “ We were fearful for Austin’s development and his social acceptance.”
Austin has been receiving services through Easter Seals for over a year. Through these services Austin’s family found comfort and a better understanding of Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy and the difficulties that come with it. Austin received Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapy, as well as the Casting Clinic through Easter Seals.
There were many struggles Austin’s family was faced with. The biggest one for them is all the time needed to be put aside for Austin’s appointments.
Before Austin started his journey with Easter Seals, he struggled with walking heel to toe, jumping, going down the stairs, kicking, and picking up items with his right hand. Austin is now able to do all of those things, since he began therapy a little over a year ago! Austin was recently released because he can now do everything other children his age can do!
Story about Austin from Mandi:
We had just got a new outdoor playset that had a rockwall. The boys ran out there to play and Austin just started climbing. I was up near the house and about had a heart attack! I didn’t think he could/ should do that. I worried he would fall so I quickly ran to the playset. By the time I got there, he was already to the top and he was so, so happy! Instead of going up with his toes, he turned his feet out to get up! He found his own to accomplish the task. I learned my lesson, let him try ( even it if scares me). He has the will to do anything and I need to get out of the way!
He had electrical stimulation therapy and kept telling me he didn’t like “the stick” his way of articulating the electrodes.
